It looks like Drake’s blackface photo wasn’t taken for a Jim Crow project despite what rumors are saying.
By now, most of you have heard Pusha T’s new diss track “The Story Adidon,” which saw the G.O.O.D Music President taking shots at the 6 God’s parents, alleged secret child, and Noah “40” Shebib’s health issues. But one of the best parts about Pusha’s diss was his cover art for the song, which found a real photo of Drake donnin’ a blackface (see pic below).
The photo, which was taken by David Leyes back in 2008, also finds the Toronto rapper rockin’ clothes from the streetwear brand Too Black Guys, making many fans believe it was all part of the company’s 2008 Jim Crow Couture project. However it turns out that wasn’t the case, and that’s not good for Drake. In fact, Too Black Guys founder Adrian Aitcheson has denied those rumors in a statement to Complex, saying the photo wasn’t taken from their photoshoot even though Drake was wearing their clothes.
“The photo in question was not from a Too Black Guys photoshoot however it did feature clothing from Too Black Guys’ JIM CROW COUTURE/HOUSE OF CROW collection which was released in 2008,” he said.
Despite the photos not being taken for a Too Black Guys project, Adrian Aitcheson said that the imagery on the clothes were in line with his brand’s general message nonetheless.
“The collection featured several graphics that highlighted the painful and dangerous period of the Jim Crow Era. Too Black Guys has a history of representing the black experience in an unapologetic way,” he said. “Although this was not an image from any of our photoshoots, we feel that Drake, who is a long- time friend of the brand, was brilliantly illustrating the hypocrisy of the Jim Crow Era. The subtleties of Drake, a young black man, mimicking how white men used to mimic and dehumanize black people may be lost in a rap battle but we should not be distracted from the issues that are still affecting our communities.”
So if Drake didn’t take that photo for a Jim Crow project, like Too Black Guys are saying, then the 6 God has some explaining to do as for why/ what it was for. We’ll continue to keep you posted moving forward.
